A widower who discovered his art-lover’s wife’s print was a lost masterpiece by famous artist Eric Ravilious has seen it sell at auction for a record £312,700.
The piece entitled ‘Bathing Machine, Aldeburgh’ was hung on the wall of the couple’s home after they picked it up in a probate sale last year.
Following his wife’s sudden death earlier this year, her husband, who wished to remain anonymous took it to JS Auctions in Bodicote where it was viewed and valued by arts expert Sarah Lewis.
The pensioner, aged in his 70s, was pleased to find the painting’s pre-sale estimate was £40,000 to £60,000 before being brought for a London-based buyer at an auction of September 27 – a record for a Ravilious piece.
Joe Smith of JS Auctions said: “He pretty much sold all the contents of his bungalow and had a few pictures as his wife was an art collector, and Sarah spotted the picture straight away.”
